Bottom line: Beet root may help you exercise longer before tiring, but its blood-pressure benefit is contested, and 12 California notices allege lead in beet powders.

What’s New This Month

  • Import alerts: FDA detains one Indian maker’s beet-root powder at the border for manufacturing-practice and labeling failures; this is not a recall of shelf products. 1 2
  • Reports to FDA: Four adverse-event reports on beet supplements and two on beet juices (2025 to 2026) include two hospital stays. Reports to FDA cannot show cause. 3
  • Lead: Twelve California notices from 2025 and 2026 allege lead in beet-root supplements; none has been filed since 21 September 2026. Notices are allegations, not lab findings. ConsumerLab reported that none of the beet products it tested exceeded its heavy-metal limits. 4 5 6
  • Blood pressure: A 2026 trial in 14 postmenopausal women found no blood-pressure effect, adding to an independent 2026 trial in 90 adults that found none. 7 8

Overview

Beet root is the red root of the beet plant (Beta vulgaris), sold as juice, powder, capsules and chews. It is rich in nitrate, which the body turns into nitric oxide, a gas that relaxes blood vessels. 9

People have used beet root as a natural medicine since Roman times; science took real interest only in recent decades. 9

Labels claim it lowers blood pressure, boosts stamina, energy and blood flow, and helps the heart, brain and liver.

How We Researched It

We rate each marketing claim with a modified version of GRADE, the system medical researchers use to say how sure we can be (i.e., high, moderate, low or very low), and check each trial with the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool, which asks whether a study’s design could skew its results. For beet root we weighed about 85 records and used 52, published from October 2022 to October 2026. We also checked 10 regulators and safety databases. We found no Cochrane review.

Research NotesTop three benefits

Endurance GRADE: Low

A review of 20 reviews (2,672 people) found beet nitrate helped people exercise longer before tiring and helped muscle endurance, both small effects. 12

Bias check: This review rated most of its source reviews low or critically low; a second review of reviews found similar small gains but reports two different figures for the same result. 23

Blood Pressure GRADE: Low

In 11 small trials of people with high blood pressure, office systolic pressure fell 5.3 points, but pooled 24-hour readings did not fall. 10 An independent 2026 trial in 90 people found no effect. 8

Bias check: The independent trials were null; several positive trials had maker or supplier ties.

Circulation and Blood Flow GRADE: Very Low

In 17 healthy men, a beet extract made arteries less stiff for a few hours, but arm blood pressure did not change. 24 A 4-week trial found no change in how the brain controls its blood flow. 25

Bias check: Tiny, short trials that measured lab markers, not health outcomes.

What Sellers Say vs. What Studies Show

“Beet root lowers blood pressure.”Office readings fell about 5 points in 11 small trials, but 24-hour readings did not, and an independent 2026 trial found no effect. 10 8
“One scoop equals a pile of beets.”ConsumerLab reported that nitrate varied widely between products, and in one lab study 2 of 4 products listing nitrate had none. 6 11
“Beet root makes you faster and stronger.”Reviews found no gain in race times, VO2max (peak oxygen use) or strength. It may help you last longer before tiring. 12
“It’s natural, so it’s pure.”Twelve California notices allege lead in beet-root supplements, and one study found cadmium in 5 of 37 products. 5 13
“It lowers cholesterol or helps you lose weight.”Reviews found no change in cholesterol, weight or body fat. 14 15
“Pink urine means something is wrong.”Pink or red urine after beets, called beeturia, is harmless. It happens in 10% to 14% of people. 16

Trial ParametersIf you try it

WhoNo marketed health benefit is established. Trials studied adults with high blood pressure and recreational athletes.
DoseTrials: 200 to 800 mg of nitrate a day. NIH ODS: about 500 mL of juice, 2.5 to 3 hours before exercise. 10 17
CeilingTrials studied up to 800 mg of nitrate a day. No upper limit is confirmed. 8
DurationTrials ran 1 to 90 days. NIH ODS (April 2024): no safety concerns at about 2 cups of juice a day for several weeks. 17
FormJuice, or a product that prints nitrate per serving and shows heavy-metal tests. Avoid powders without a lead certificate.
Ask FirstCalcium-oxalate kidney stones; low blood pressure or fainting; nitrate heart drugs or PDE5 inhibitors; pregnancy or breastfeeding. Never replace blood-pressure medicine.
Source: 10 and studies cited.

How to Take It

Pick a planTrials used 200 to 800 mg of nitrate a day, so ask a clinician about your dose. Check home blood pressure for 2 weeks before and 2 to 4 weeks after starting. 10
Time of dayFor exercise, NIH ODS describes juice taken about 2.5 to 3 hours before. Otherwise not reported. 17
With foodNot reported.
What to expectTrials ran 1 to 90 days. Clinic blood pressure fell about 5 points, but 24-hour pressure did not. 10
How to takeChoose juice, the form most trials used; NIH ODS notes powders have not been tested as substitutes. Stop at hives, trouble breathing or fainting. 17

Works With / Don’t Mix With

✓ Works with

Eating less salt. In the 2026 trial where beet juice did nothing, less salt lowered 24-hour blood pressure by 7 points. 8

Not reported: no supplement is shown to add to its effect.

⚠ Ask first / don’t mix

Nitrate heart drugs or PDE5 inhibitors (such as nitroglycerin). Reported caution: blood pressure could drop too far; no human study has tested it.

Blood-pressure medicine. Effects may add up. Never swap one for the other. 10

Also ask first if you have had calcium-oxalate kidney stones; beet juice holds 60 to 70 mg of oxalate per 100 mL. 18 Pregnant or breastfeeding? Ask first; we found no safety data at supplement doses. Not reported: combinations with other supplements.

Where to Buy

We compare products side-by-side not just on price, but on whether NSF lists the product as NSF/ANSI 173 Contents Certified (an independent lab confirms the label matches the contents), whether it is NSF Certified for Sport, whether USP lists it as USP Verified, and whether the seller says it is manufactured in the USA. We leave out a brand’s products for this supplement when, in the last 36 months, the FDA took action against that brand over this supplement (a Class I or II recall, a warning letter, an import alert or an advisory letter). We also leave out any brand with an FDA Class II recall or warning letter on any product. We also leave out any product named in a California Prop 65 notice or a non-US recall, along with that brand’s products of the same ingredient and form. Brands with other actions stay listed and are marked in the Recall Screen column. Our goal remains to provide you, the Consumer, with the information and data necessary to make an informed purchasing decision. Prices reflected below are static and subject to change.

Recall Screen: ✓* means the brand’s only actions in the last 36 months are a California Prop 65 notice, a non-US recall or sales action, an FDA Class III supplement recall, or a food recall, each on a different product from the one listed. Prop 65 notices are allegations by private enforcers, not findings. A blank means the brand had another FDA action in that period, such as an import alert or a recall of a different product, or a minor (Class III) recall of this product.
